THINKING CLASSROOM FOUNDATION

The Thinking Classroom Foundation is umbrella organization of the Teacher Training Center for Burmese Teachers (TTBT), Migrant Learning Center (MLC) and Child Learning Center (CLC). The Foundation is registered in Thailand with License No. Tor. Chor. Mor. 36/2551 since October 2008. The aims and objectives of the foundation are to support education to disadvantaged children; to provide training to deprived young people promoting vocational skills and basic knowledge such as language and computer; and to develop teacher education promoting active learning and critical thinking.

We implement the following educational components:

§       Teacher Preparation and Professional Development

§       Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT) Workshops

§       Leadership and Management in Education

§       Education Policy and Curriculum Development

§       Migrant Learning Center

§       Child Learning Center and

§       Primary School Support

These are our current priority because we need qualified teachers who help students to promote active learning and critical thinking; we need educational leadership for a democratic educational reform in Burma; we want to help educators to develop education policy and curriculum development in every region of Burma; we want all children in school; and we want to help young people to equip required skills for their job opportunity.

TEACHER TRAINING CENTER FOR BURMESE TEACHERS

Promoting Active Learning and Critical Thinking …

Teacher Training Center for Burmese Teachers (TTBT) is a non-profit educational institute operating independently in exile, currently based in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand since 2001.  It seeks to improve the quality of education in refugee camps, ceasefire regions, remote areas of Burma and migrant workers in Thailand, by training new teachers, promoting active learning, critical thinking and democratic practice in schools, providing professional development opportunities for existing teachers, and developing educational policy and practice.

MIGRANT LEARNING CENTER

Skills Development for Migrant Workers …

A Learning Center has been operating in Chiang Mai, Thailand for migrant workers from Burma since October 2005. The center offers Thai Language, English Language, Burmese Language and Computer training. Anybody regardless of race, gender, age, language, education, religion, political belief and social background can apply for the courses. Tuition is free. The course starts from basic to advanced levels. The courses design two sessions – morning 9:00-11:00 and evening 18:00-20:00. We provide new courses every two month. About 2500 students have completed the courses within two years.

WA ORPHANAGE SCHOOL, YIN PHAN

Education for All …

TTBT has been providing financial and technical support to a primary school in Yinphan, Wa State of Burma since 2004. There are many children inside Burma, in the ceasefire regions, remote areas of Burma and children of Burmese migrant workers in Thailand who have little opportunity to attend school. We are looking for more funding to provide primary education for these children. We have trained teachers and they will teach at these schools.

CHILD LEARNING CENTER, CHIANG MAI

The Child Learning Center (CLC) in Chiang Mai has started on 17 April 2008 for those children of Burmese migrant workers who do not attend any other schools. It is a multi-ethnic school. The school mission is ‘promoting critical thinking and moral development’. The school teaches Burmese, English, Thai, Math, Computer, Science and Environment, Social Studies and Cultures. Shan language is taught to Shan speaking children.

For the 2009-2010 academic year, The Center (CLC) will re-open on Saturday 23 May 2009 for the children of Burmese migrant workers living around Chiang Mai. The CLC will open only in the weekend although it was opened from Monday to Friday last year. The idea is that Burmese children may go to Thai schools and they can also join CLC in the weekend.
